'I'm going for the world / Even if the world's not ready for me', zingt Joe Pagetta in Going For The World. Later in het liedje blijkt dat Joe eerst nog wel een klasgenootje zover moet krijgen met hem naar het schoolbal te gaan. Hopelijk is dat wél gelukt, want ik betwijfel of de wereld op Joywood (Fully Dressed) zit te wachten. Naar mijn smaak bevat Pagetta's tweede cd te veel mainstream gitaarpop- en rock, die te vaak naar het midden van de weg neigt (Say Goodbye). Hier en daar zijn rootsy elementen toegevoegd (mandoline, melodica, harmonica, dobro), maar het is doorgaans de elektrische gitaar van medeproducer George Marinelli (Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt) die het geluid bepaalt. Het grootsteedse geluid van Pagetta's geboorteplaats Jersey City voert de boventoon, ondanks het feit dat hij sinds 1998 thuis is in Nashville. Een paar liedjes springen eruit: het genoemde Going For The World, het countryachtige Cherry Baby (een liefdesliedje voor een van de hand gedane oude auto), en de meezinger I'll Be Right Back. Curieus is de vocale bijdrage van Kim Carnes (Bette Davies Eyes) op When She Moves. (Peer Bataille)
"I'm going for the world/even if the world's not ready for me," sings Joe Pagetta in "Going For The World." Later in the song we realized that Joe must first get up the courage to ask a girl in class to go to the school ball. The hope is that he succeeded, because I doubt if the world on Joywood (Fully Dressed) will wait. To my taste Pagetta's contain second cd too much mainstream guitar pop, and rock, which too frequently tends toward the middle of the road (Say Goodbye). Here and there are rootsy elements added (mandoline, melodica, harmonica, dobro), but it is generally the electric guitar and ear of producer George Marinelli (Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt) that creates the sound. The metropolitan sound of Pagetta's Jersey city roots informs the songs, in spite of the fact that since 1998 his home has been in Nashville. A couple of songs jump out: the prevously mentioned "Going For The World," the country-tinged "Cherry Baby" (a love song for an old car that was sold), and the rocker I'll Be Right back. Curiously, the vocal contribution of kim Carnes (Bette Davies Eyes) is on "When She Moves." (Pear Bataille)
